Undergrounding Will Not Be Discussed at the December 20th, City Council Meeting

Please note that the Underground Utility District item originally proposed for the December 20 City Council meeting has been postponed to a future date. Customers who have signed up for our mailing list will be notified when the exact date has been decided, and we will also continue to post updates here on our website.

Public Utilities Board Recommends Restructuring City’s Undergrounding of Utilities

At the November 21, 2011 meeting of the Public Utilities Board, the Board authorized the development of a plan to restructure the utilities undergrounding program in the City of Alameda. Alameda Municipal Power staff was directed by the Board to:

Postpone further work on Underground Utility District 31.
Determine a process to prioritize subsequent underground districts in Underground Utility District, Phase 6 and present that recommendation to the City Council.
- Establish financing options to assist customers with underground service lateral cost.
- Develop a polling process, including a Minimum Customer Acceptance Threshold (MCAT) to be used in determining priorities within District 6.
- Examine undergrounding programs in the cities of San Diego and San Leandro for possible policy and program inclusions in the Alameda restructuring.
- Engage in a pro-active public outreach and information campaign regarding the restructuring process and outcomes.

Alameda Municipal Power staff will report back to the community, Public Utilities Board and ultimately the City Council as the revised undergrounding program recommendation is being developed.

Underground Utlilty District No. 31

The City of Alameda's next scheduled undergrounding initiative has been Underground Utility District No. 31. The project was intended to eliminate all overhead line crossings along Webster Street, the western gateway to Alameda.

With the restructuring of the undergrounding program, the work on UUD31 has been postponed. What follows is the record of communications, studies, and reports concerning this proejct.

Public Utilities Board Meeting - October 17, 2011

AMP staff presented an update on the status of Underground Utility District No. 31 to the City of Alameda Public Utilities Board on Monday evening, October 17. The meeting was held at City Hall Council Chambers. Click here to download the Information Update and Presentation. Public Utilities Board Meeting - August 15, 2011

AMP staff presented an update on the status of Underground Utility District No. 31 to the City of Alameda Public Utilities Board on Monday evening, August 15. The meeting was held at the AMP Service Center. Click here to download the Information Update and Presentation.

Many speakers addressed the Board at this meeting. The Board gave staff direction on items to be addressed and requested a report back to the Board. Staff is working on these issues and will report their findings at the October 17th Public Utilities Meeting. The proposed construction schedule has also been pushed out to allow for this additional work.

Town Hall Meeting - July 14, 2011

In July, AMP conducted a "town hall" meeting for property owners who would be financially impacted by the project, in order to respond to questions and address concerns. AMP also has attempted to notify all affected customers by letter.
